Processing of a pencil sketch in Photoshop
Step 1
I drew some simple six pencil sketches on a standard A4 paper. In order to get your icons more or less in the same size I divided my paper to six equal squares. The size of one square is 100x100 mm.
The style of our icons can be called "casual"; I've spent not more than 10 minutes on all the drawing. Scan our drawings and open its digital equivalent in Photoshop (File > Open…).
Step 2
Click on the "New fill or adjustment layer" in the Layers panel holding down Option / Alt. Choose Channel Mixer… in the fly-out menu.
Name a new layer and click on OK in a newly opened dialog box.
Step 3
Open the Adjustments panel (Window > Adjustments), then tick Monochrome and set the values: 150% for red and green channels, 0% for blue and 200% for Constant.
As you can see, the lines of our pencil sketch turned black, but there still remain some grey spots around sketches.
Let's remove them.
Step 4
Click again on the "New fill or adjustment layer" in the Layers panel holding down Option / Alt and choose Levels… in the fly-out menu.
Name a new layer, then operate the sliders in such a way that our background turn completely white. You can also use presets, in my case the preset Increase Contrast 3 worked just fine.
Step 5
One problem still remains - artifacts of jpg image.
To remove them click twice on the Background layer and rename the layer.
Then open the fly-out menu of the Layers panel and choose Convert to Smart Object command.
Now go to the Filter > Noise > Despeckle.
Open the dialog box of the effect and set the Lighten blending mode.
Step 6
Let's continue cleaning the object. Select the upper layer and then use the shortcut Cmd / Ctrl + Shift + n for the creation of the new layer.
Take the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and while holding down the Shift button select the horizontal and vertical lines on the picture.
Click on the "d" key to set white as a default background color.
To fill the selected field with white click on the Cmd + Delete for Mac users or Ctrl + Backspace for Windows users.
Using this technique, color the rest of the "mud" on our image.
You can also use the Brush Tool (B) to clean your image. To have brush strokes in white, switch foreground and background colors.
Creation of Vector Sketch in Adobe Illustrator
Step 7
Save our file in PSD format and then paste the image to Adobe Illustrator (File > Place…) and click on the Embed button in the Control panel.
In the newly opened dialog box choose the Flatten Layers to a Single Image option and click on OK.
Keep the image selected and go to the Object > Live Trace > Tracing Options… and experiment with presets in a dialog box.
In my case the One Color Logo preset worked just fine. Tick Ignore White in the Tracing Options dialog box, and then click Trace.
Press Expand button in the Control panel. Now we got 100% vector sketch.
Conclusion
I think that vector sketch has a very good commercial potential even though its creation doesn't take much time. Let's just try!
